# Payments in Cameroon: fees, mobile money and usable XAF balances

What will it cost to collect a payment in Cameroon, and when can the money pay the next bill? Those questions belong together. A successful mobile-money payment does not, by itself, tell a business how much it will receive in its bank account or whether a separate payout account is funded.

This guide compares a dated set of gateway-supplied offers and the practical questions behind MTN MoMo, Orange Money and regional payment connectivity. It helps you request a useful quote before choosing a provider.

## 1. Ten recorded offers, two different jobs

The **14 September 2026** snapshot contains **10 unique offer records associated only with Cameroon**: five for collection and five for payouts. All ten have an XAF currency association.

An offer is a catalogue record, not an independent provider, active integration or approved route. Country, currency and method links were recorded separately, so their combination does not prove that a particular gateway supports every local method. Public operator documentation below is independent context, not a match to private supplier identities.

For your shortlist, define both jobs: how customers pay and how the business uses or distributes the proceeds. A provider that fits one job still needs to be assessed for the other.

## 2. Compare the percentage component, then request the full price

Across five XAF-denominated collection records with an explicit matching percentage, the unweighted mean is **5.50%**. Across five comparable payout records, it is **4.35%**. Each record has equal weight; these figures are descriptive components from a small historical sample, not market averages or current quotations.

For a **hypothetical XAF 20,000 transaction**, those percentages alone would represent XAF 1,100 for collection and XAF 870 for a payout. They describe separate calculations, not one combined offer. Fixed charges, taxes, foreign exchange, settlement costs and reserves are excluded. Neither amount is the final price you should budget.

We do not publish individual prices, ranges, medians or fixed-fee amounts from these small groups. Sparse fixed-fee evidence does not support a useful public average, and a blank or zero field does not prove there is no additional charge. Ask each candidate for a current written quote showing the percentage, fixed amount and currency, minimum charges, taxes, settlement fees and exceptions for your expected transaction sizes.

The data came from gateways and has not been independently verified as commercial fact. Conditions can change weekly or more often.

## 3. Plan the balance that actually funds the next payment

All five collection records contain a settlement-timing description, but their small timing groups are not published individually. A written T/D label is a stated condition, not measured speed. Confirm its starting event, business or calendar days, cut-off, settlement currency, deductions and when the funds become usable.

MTN's Cameroon Collections documentation describes onward supplier, partner or employee payments as well as liquidation to the business's bank account. Its separately documented Disbursement product uses a dedicated prefunded account. These are different product workflows, and the chosen contract must establish which one is enabled. [MTN Collections](https://momoapi.mtn.com/Cameroon_Collection_productDetails), [MTN Disbursements](https://momoapi.mtn.com/Cameroon_Disbursement_productDetails).

Consider a **hypothetical** repair business that needs XAF 250,000 for technician payments through a separate disbursement account. If that account has XAF 100,000 available, another XAF 150,000 is required, before fees or other adjustments. Collections held elsewhere do not prove that this funding step has happened. The chart shows this arithmetic; it is not an observed account balance or an available transfer facility.

Ask for funding instructions, the timing of balance updates and evidence for each completed payout. Reconcile transfers between business accounts separately from sales, so moving existing money does not become new revenue in the report.

## 4. There is no measured conversion average in this snapshot

The source does not provide a verified common transaction sample with successful attempts, total attempts and a comparable observation period. We therefore publish no average conversion or approval rate. Marketing statements cannot replace that evidence.

Before a pilot, agree what counts as an attempt, a completed payment, a pending result and a repeated request. Compare your own observed results by method and business scenario. A sent request or accepted batch is not sufficient evidence that every customer payment or recipient payout completed.

## 5. Qualify the local product, recipient and refund procedure

Orange Business Cameroon describes a merchant code linked to a SIM, with an application and business documentation for subscription. A personal wallet is not evidence that the company has completed merchant onboarding. [Orange Business merchant payments](https://business.orange.cm/fr/orange-money-pro/paiement-marchand.html).

The documented MTN Disbursement product specifies recipients registered with MTN Mobile Money. GIMAC's QR description covers wallets of different participating institutions in CEMAC through a bank or operator. Neither statement means every gateway in the catalogue supports every recipient. [GIMAC FAQ](https://gimac-afr.com/faq/).

Request the enabled method and direction, eligible recipient types, transaction and daily limits, usable balance, refund procedure and reconciliation fields. MTN's Cameroon help page limits customer self-reversal to P2P transfers, excluding other payments. Agree a merchant refund process instead of assuming a customer menu reverses a purchase. ## 6. Check authorisation for the actual service

BEAC's official regulatory index lists CEMAC's payment-services regulation. Before launch, verify the contracting provider's authorisation and the permissions relevant to the business activity, recipients and movement of funds. A regional network description does not establish a merchant's eligibility or a cross-border settlement arrangement. [BEAC: COBAC regulations](https://www.beac.int/supervision-bancaire/reglements-de-cobac/).

The legal-source review is dated **30 September 2026**, separately from the commercial snapshot. It is not a legal opinion on an individual business or route. Current rules and provider status need another check before onboarding. PayStar supports lawful products using appropriately authorised payment services; a technical connection does not replace required permissions.

## 7. PayStar's role

[PayStar Discovery](https://paystar.uk/discovery) structures the search around your country, business activity, company jurisdiction, methods, currencies, volumes and operational needs. It helps turn a broad request into a focused shortlist and questions to qualify with each provider.

You select the PSP and contract with it directly. The PSP processes payments and settles funds under that agreement. PayStar provides information and its separately agreed technical layer. **PayStar does not act as a bank or payment service provider (PSP), and is not a payment organiser.** PayStar does not organise payment acceptance or settlement in its own name: it does not receive, hold or settle customer or business funds. PayStar does not turn a recorded offer into guaranteed approval, availability or settlement.

## About the data

Historical gateway snapshot: 14 September 2026. Unique country-only records were deduplicated before calculation. The fee sample includes XAF-denominated fee objects with one explicit percentage matching the structured percentage-point value; five records per direction, none excluded under that rule. Means are unweighted and compare only the stated percentage component. Small timing groups and individual fixed amounts remain private. The calculations check internal aggregation, not the truth of gateway claims. Terms may already be outdated. The covers are editorial AI illustrations, not verified documentary viewpoints or payment-coverage maps.
