# Payment Solutions in China: Acceptance, Settlement and CNY Payouts

When choosing payment solutions for China, first define the merchant entity, sales channel and destination for the proceeds. A familiar customer wallet does not explain which agreement the business needs or the currency it will receive. Price comparisons become useful after that arrangement is established.

## A numerical starting point for the provider comparison

We reviewed **26 unique historical payment offers** linked only to this country: 14 collection offers and 12 payout offers. They provide a structured starting point for comparing payment costs, access to funds and operational requirements. 60 additional offers linked to several countries are excluded from the country-only calculations below.

The source is the PayStar export dated 14 September 2026, supplied by payment gateways. We recomputed its aggregates, but did not independently verify its commercial statements. This is a historical sample, not a market survey, a count of PSPs or methods, or proof of active connections and current availability. Conditions can change weekly or more often. Independent country, currency and method associations do not establish every possible payment route. Direction counts and settlement-label charts cover all recorded currencies. Only the percentage comparison below is restricted to explicit CNY fee records.

## What the recorded CNY percentage components show

We calculate the arithmetic mean of explicit percentage components stated in CNY, giving each comparable offer equal weight. A record qualifies only when its structured percentage matches one unambiguous percentage in the original fee description. Offers in another fee currency, missing percentages and ambiguous descriptions are excluded.

We also exclude bound or conditional percentages such as “from”, tiers and explicitly restricted customer categories. Exact nominal percentage components with fixed minimums or caps can remain in the sample; those minimums and caps still affect the final charge.

| Direction | n | Mean | Median | Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Collections | 14 | 6.59% | 6.5% | 5–8% |
| Payouts | 7 | 3.43% | 3% | 2.5–4.5% |

Explicit CNY percentage components only. n is the comparable sample in each direction; missing fees are excluded, not zero. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/china-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/fees-en-desktop-download.svg)

**These are percentage components, not all-in payment prices.** Fixed charges, FX, tax, reserves, minimums and charges for refunds or other exceptions must be assessed separately. This sample is not weighted by payment volume, contains no measured conversion rate and cannot rank provider quality. Small or insufficiently independent groups are withheld.

### A hypothetical payment calculation

Take an illustrative payment of 100 CNY; this is not a typical market ticket. Applying the rounded means shown above gives:

- Collections: 100 CNY × 6.59% = **6.59 CNY**.
- Payouts: 100 CNY × 3.43% = **3.43 CNY**.

Each line is a separate direction, not a combined service quote. The arithmetic shows only the percentage part. Ask for an actual quote at your ticket size, volume, business model and settlement currency before calculating net proceeds.

## When money becomes usable matters

Collection offers across all recorded currencies. T/D labels are recorded as supplied, without assuming calendar or business days. Other includes complex labels and pooled groups below 3 records. No guaranteed settlement time. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/china-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/timing-en-desktop-download.svg)

A successful payment notification and money available to your business are different events. Treat recorded settlement labels as questions for a provider: what starts the clock, which cut-off applies, are weekends counted, which account is credited, and can a reserve or review delay availability?

For payouts, agree prefunding, beneficiary validation, rejection handling and how returned funds appear in your balance. An incoming-payment settlement label does not prove payout completion time.

### A cash-buffer planning example

If a business must fund 10,000 CNY of obligations per day, a one-day gap requires 10,000 CNY; a three-day gap requires 30,000 CNY. The additional buffer is 20,000 CNY. This is a hypothetical constant-flow model, excluding fees, reserves and volatility, not an observed settlement promise.

## A customer wallet and a merchant account have different jobs

A customer needs a convenient way to pay; a merchant needs an eligible acceptance agreement, transaction evidence and an agreed way to receive the proceeds. A successful payment in a familiar app does not establish that your legal entity can contract the same service.

For the merchant side, WeChat Pay's PC website guide describes Native payment: the merchant's system generates a payment QR code and the customer scans it to confirm the specified amount. The same guide separately lists company documents, a corporate bank account, review and agreement steps. This is a defined merchant application process, not an assurance that every overseas company can use that product. [WeChat Pay merchant guide](https://pay.wechatpay.cn/static/applyment_guide/applyment_detail_website.shtml)

Ask a potential PSP to demonstrate the actual journey: desktop QR checkout, mobile browser, or an in-app payment. Request the order identifier, payment confirmation and failure result for that journey. A screenshot of a successful consumer payment cannot answer how your finance team will reconcile orders or investigate missing confirmations.

## Establish the merchant arrangement before comparing prices

Start the brief with the contracting entity, country of registration, business activity and website or app. Then specify whether the proposed arrangement is domestic merchant acceptance or a cross-border service, and where customers and the settlement account are located.

For each candidate, ask which documents establish the legal entity, business activity and ownership of the website or application. Request the terms of the exact product: onboarding requirements and settlement currencies should not be transferred from one service to every Alipay proposal.

An accepted wallet brand therefore belongs in the comparison alongside the exact product and merchant agreement. Before treating an offer as qualified, ask the PSP to confirm your entity, activity, customer geography and intended flow in writing. Keep any unresolved requirement visible instead of counting the option as ready to launch.

## CNY at checkout does not define the settlement account

Record three currencies separately: the customer's payment currency, the merchant's pricing currency and the currency credited to the settlement account. Where conversion occurs, request the rate source, conversion point and fees. Also identify the account holder and destination country.

Alipay publishes a separate agreement for eligible cross-border platform proceeds paid into a designated mainland RMB account after application review. That agreement calls for transaction information and supporting trade documents. This is a specific inward settlement service, not evidence that any China-linked payment can be moved across borders. [Alipay cross-border payment and settlement agreement](https://render.alipay.com/p/c/k2zomyhh)

Timing also needs its own answer. Alipay's global settlement help distinguishes settlement by amount from settlement by cycle and notes the role of banks in final receipt timing. Use that distinction to ask about the proposed contract's trigger, calendar, deductions and bank receipt. Do not substitute a generic help-page schedule for the PSP's offer. ## Compare collections, refunds and payouts separately

Collections receive customer payments for the merchant's sales. Refunds relate to an earlier order. Business payouts send money to an eligible recipient for a stated purpose. Treat these as separate qualification questions: the recorded payout classification alone does not prove a particular business payout use case.

| Requirement | Collections and order refunds | Business payouts |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Transaction evidence | Order, payment and original refund references | Recipient details and payment purpose |
| Product confirmation | Supported checkout and refund operation | Supported recipient type and destination |
| Financial comparison | Processing fees, refund treatment and settlement | Funding, payout fees and failed-payment treatment |
| Operational proof | Payment confirmation and reconciliation records | Final status, failure reason and returned funds |

For a hypothetical example, consider a merchant planning 200 orders at CNY 300 each: CNY 60,000 in gross collections. Ten full refunds would represent CNY 3,000 against original orders. A separate proposed CNY 5,000 supplier payment is a different requirement. The arithmetic does not show that the collection balance can fund that payout, or when CNY 57,000 after refunds becomes available. Those answers depend on the qualified products and their contracts. This is an illustration, not a customer case or quoted offer.

## The role of PayStar

PayStar provides information for comparing payment solutions and, where agreed, a technical layer for connecting and operating them. PayStar is not a bank or payment service provider and does not accept, hold or settle customer or business funds in its own name.

You select the payment provider and enter into a direct agreement with it. The provider processes payments and performs settlement under that agreement. Local eligibility, required authorisations and commercial terms must be confirmed for your company and use case. A method described in this article is not a promise that it is available through PayStar for your business.

Information about payment options is free. Payment processing and any agreed technical services have separate commercial terms.
