# Payment Providers in Colombia: PSE, Bre-B and COP Payouts

Comparing payment providers in Colombia starts with the customer journey. A buyer paying through PSE, a customer scanning a merchant's Bre-B QR code and a business sending a COP payout create different requirements for authorization, order matching and payment evidence. The useful question is what the proposed service will let your business complete and verify. Request a demonstration of the payment flow, its final status and the money movement before selecting a provider on the strength of a familiar method name.

## A numerical starting point for the provider comparison

We reviewed **52 unique historical payment offers** linked only to this country: 32 collection offers and 20 payout offers. They provide a structured starting point for comparing payment costs, access to funds and operational requirements. 78 additional offers linked to several countries are excluded from the country-only calculations below.

The source is the PayStar export dated 14 September 2026, supplied by payment gateways. We recomputed its aggregates, but did not independently verify its commercial statements. This is a historical sample, not a market survey, a count of PSPs or methods, or proof of active connections and current availability. Conditions can change weekly or more often. Independent country, currency and method associations do not establish every possible payment route. Direction counts and settlement-label charts cover all recorded currencies. Only the percentage comparison below is restricted to explicit COP fee records.

## What the recorded COP percentage components show

We calculate the arithmetic mean of explicit percentage components stated in COP, giving each comparable offer equal weight. A record qualifies only when its structured percentage matches one unambiguous percentage in the original fee description. Offers in another fee currency, missing percentages and ambiguous descriptions are excluded.

We also exclude bound or conditional percentages such as “from”, tiers and explicitly restricted customer categories. Exact nominal percentage components with fixed minimums or caps can remain in the sample; those minimums and caps still affect the final charge.

| Direction | n | Mean | Median | Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Collections | 31 | 3.86% | 3.75% | 2.5–5.5% |
| Payouts | 20 | 2.77% | 2.7% | 1.5–4% |

Explicit COP percentage components only. n is the comparable sample in each direction; missing fees are excluded, not zero. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/colombia-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/fees-en-desktop-download.svg)

**These are percentage components, not all-in payment prices.** Fixed charges, FX, tax, reserves, minimums and charges for refunds or other exceptions must be assessed separately. This sample is not weighted by payment volume, contains no measured conversion rate and cannot rank provider quality. Small or insufficiently independent groups are withheld.

### A hypothetical payment calculation

Take an illustrative payment of 20,000 COP; this is not a typical market ticket. Applying the rounded means shown above gives:

- Collections: 20,000 COP × 3.86% = **772 COP**.
- Payouts: 20,000 COP × 2.77% = **554 COP**.

Each line is a separate direction, not a combined service quote. The arithmetic shows only the percentage part. Ask for an actual quote at your ticket size, volume, business model and settlement currency before calculating net proceeds.

## When money becomes usable matters

Collection offers across all recorded currencies. T/D labels are recorded as supplied, without assuming calendar or business days. Other includes complex labels and pooled groups below 3 records. No guaranteed settlement time. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/colombia-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/timing-en-desktop-download.svg)

A successful payment notification and money available to your business are different events. Treat recorded settlement labels as questions for a provider: what starts the clock, which cut-off applies, are weekends counted, which account is credited, and can a reserve or review delay availability?

For payouts, agree prefunding, beneficiary validation, rejection handling and how returned funds appear in your balance. An incoming-payment settlement label does not prove payout completion time.

### A cash-buffer planning example

If a business must fund 2,000,000 COP of obligations per day, a one-day gap requires 2,000,000 COP; a three-day gap requires 6,000,000 COP. The additional buffer is 4,000,000 COP. This is a hypothetical constant-flow model, excluding fees, reserves and volatility, not an observed settlement promise.

## PSE: follow the checkout through to its final result

ACH Colombia describes PSE as an online payment service through which customers authorize a debit from a savings account, current account or electronic deposit using their financial institution's digital banking. Its merchant page describes collections credited to an account at a participating receiving institution. [PSE customer guidance](https://www.pse.com.co/persona); [PSE for businesses](https://www.pse.com.co/empresa).

For PSE payment acceptance, ask the proposed PSP to demonstrate the complete journey on mobile: selection of the financial institution, authorization, return to the merchant and confirmation against the original order. Include abandonment and a customer returning after the checkout session expires.

The PSE customer FAQ publishes a maximum transaction processing time of 21 minutes. Treat that as information about the described service, and agree the actual status handling with your provider. A short checkout timer must not silently turn an unresolved payment into a failed one. [PSE processing FAQ](https://www.pse.com.co/persona).

During evaluation, ask which result authorizes fulfilment, how that result can be retrieved if the customer closes the browser, and how a late success is matched to an expired order. Request the references and timestamps that support an investigation. This makes the checkout discussion useful to both product and operations teams.

## Bre-B: qualify the merchant service around the payment

Banco de la República describes Bre-B as Colombia's interoperable immediate payments system, available through participating financial institutions' digital channels. Its guidance includes person-to-merchant payments using a registered key, known as a Llave, or a QR code. An institution-assigned merchant code is one available type of Llave. [Banco de la República: Conozca Bre-B](https://www.banrep.gov.co/es/bre-b/que-es).

For a merchant, accepting a transfer is only part of the job. Ask how the service identifies the order, communicates the amount and confirms that the correct merchant received it. Establish whether the proposed QR is static or generated for the purchase, which information it carries, and what the PSP sends back to your system.

Consider a hypothetical store with two open orders, each for COP 100,000. Both customers pay the same merchant within a minute. An amount and a screenshot leave the store with a matching problem. Ask the provider to demonstrate how each payment is assigned to its own order and how an unmatched receipt is investigated. Evaluate the actual offered service; QR support alone does not answer this question.

Bre-B also involves a recipient check. The central bank's FAQ describes showing the recipient's masked name before confirmation. Request a checkout demonstration that makes the merchant identity clear, and establish how a reported wrong-recipient payment reaches the appropriate support team. [Banco de la República: Bre-B FAQ](https://www.banrep.gov.co/es/bre-b/preguntas-frecuentes).

## Give COP payouts a separate qualification brief

Receiving Colombian peso payments does not establish that the same provider can send your business payouts. Define the recipient types, payment purpose, destination accounts or other supported destinations, and information available in your own records.

The central bank describes Bre-B as supporting domestic payments and transfers. That context does not establish an international settlement service or an automated payout API for your company. Confirm the proposed channel and its commercial scope directly. [Bre-B FAQ](https://www.banrep.gov.co/es/bre-b/preguntas-frecuentes).

Use a small set of operational questions:

- What recipient information is validated before funds are sent, and what happens when it does not match?
- Which reference and status establish the outcome, including a rejected or returned payout?
- How is an uncertain result investigated before another instruction is sent?
- Which transaction, daily and batch limits apply to your approved business account?

Ask for sample responses and reports using test data. A confirmed destination, an accepted instruction and a completed payout should be distinguishable in the evidence your team receives.

## Compare the cash position as well as the checkout

PSE's business help centre states that financial institutions credit merchant collection accounts according to their own policies, procedures and schedules. Confirm the settlement arrangement in the actual PSP proposal, including its account requirements, deductions and cut-offs. [PSE business help centre](https://www.pse.com.co/empresa-centro-de-ayuda).

For each collection service, document where funds first arrive and when they become available to your business. For payouts, establish how the balance is funded and how rejected or returned payments affect it. If treasury needs another currency or a bank account outside Colombia, include that requirement from the start.

Request a sample report linking the customer order or payout instruction to the provider reference, final outcome, fees and account movement. That gives your finance team something concrete to assess for [payment reconciliation](https://paystar.uk/reconciliation).

## The role of PayStar

PayStar provides information for comparing payment solutions and, where agreed, a technical layer for connecting and operating them. PayStar is not a bank or payment service provider and does not accept, hold or settle customer or business funds in its own name.

You select the payment provider and enter into a direct agreement with it. The provider processes payments and performs settlement under that agreement. Local eligibility, required authorisations and commercial terms must be confirmed for your company and use case. A method described in this article is not a promise that it is available through PayStar for your business.

Information about payment options is free. Payment processing and any agreed technical services have separate commercial terms.
