# Payment solutions in The Gambia: costs and usable GMD

A payment can reach a mobile wallet while the money needed for a supplier invoice is still somewhere else. For a business comparing payment providers in The Gambia, that distinction belongs beside the processing fee: which balance is credited, who can use it, and what must happen before the next obligation can be paid?

PayStar's historical inventory gives this comparison a starting point: 8 country-only recorded offers. Local payment-system documentation adds a second perspective. Bank and wallet connectivity can make transfers easier, but the merchant still needs a suitable contract, an explicit money-flow arrangement and evidence of completion.

## Eight recorded offers, two different business needs

The gateway-supplied snapshot dated **14 September 2026** contains **8 unique payment offers linked exclusively to The Gambia: 4 incoming-payment records and 4 payout records**. All eight have a GMD currency association. These are offer records, not eight independent PSPs, active integrations or approved routes. The underlying statements were not independently verified.

Country, currency and payment-method links were collected separately. Their presence does not prove every possible combination, or establish the currency eventually credited to the business. Wider international-coverage records are excluded from this country-only count.

Four observations per direction are a small commercial sample. We do not publish their private fee averages, ranges or timing subgroups. They would add apparent precision while making individual terms easier to infer. Use the inventory to request current written proposals, then compare those proposals against the same business requirements.

## A connected wallet is not a complete merchant arrangement

[Gamswitch describes](https://www.gamswitch.com/service/instant-fund-transfers) domestic transfers between connected banks and wallets. Its service description includes bank-to-wallet and wallet-to-bank flows. This establishes the operator's stated network functions, not access through every intermediary or eligibility for a particular business.

The practical question is which operation the provider will actually contract to supply. A transfer into a personal wallet, merchant collection, payroll and a withdrawal to a bank account are different requirements. Ask for a demonstration using the proposed business account and the intended recipient type.

[QMoney's official site](https://qmoney.gm/) distinguishes business payment services and merchant QR acceptance from the use of agents for deposits and withdrawals. [Afrimoney's FAQ](https://www.africell.gm/afrimoney/faqs/) also describes merchant payments and bank-account linking. Those public examples help define the questions; they do not identify the anonymous providers in our inventory or confirm a PayStar integration.

For a collection, record the order reference, merchant account, final transaction reference and amount credited. For a payout, add the recipient identifier and the point at which the provider treats its payment obligation as complete. If the recipient needs cash, establish that separate step as well.

## Compare the fee on your transaction size

An advertised percentage is only one part of the decision. Request the percentage charge, any fixed amount, minimum charge, taxes, currency conversion, refunds, settlement transfers and recurring service fees. Determine whether each cost is withheld from proceeds, deducted from another balance or invoiced later.

**Hypothetical example — these are invented tariffs, not Gambian quotes:** tariff A charges 2% plus GMD 3; tariff B charges 1.5% plus GMD 12. On a GMD 200 payment, the costs are GMD 7 and GMD 15 respectively. On GMD 2,000, they become GMD 43 and GMD 42. The lower percentage wins only above the GMD 1,800 break-even point, where both cost GMD 39. Other charges are excluded.

<!-- chart:fees -->

Calculate the monthly result from your own transaction mix, including small orders and refunds. A quote that performs well on a large-ticket demonstration can have a different cost on your usual sale. The illustration provides a comparison method, not an estimate of the market price.

Recipient costs deserve a separate column. [QMoney's customer tariff page](https://qmoney.gm/customer-tariffs/) separates cash-out charges from other transaction categories. Customer cash-out pricing is not a merchant processing quote. Confirm the applicable customer product, charge payer and current tariff instead of adding a consumer fee to every business payout by default.

## Locate the money before promising a payment date

Define the intended destination of settlement: a business wallet, a local bank account or another approved destination. Ask what event makes funds transferable, whether a separate instruction is needed and how a pending movement appears in the report. Domestic transfer functionality does not establish cross-border merchant settlement or permission to send proceeds abroad.

**Hypothetical cash-flow exercise:** a business receives GMD 100,000, incurs an assumed GMD 2,000 in fees and returns GMD 5,000 to customers. GMD 93,000 remains. Suppose GMD 62,000 is still in its business wallet and GMD 31,000 is usable in its bank account. A supplier invoice requiring GMD 40,000 from that bank account leaves a **GMD 9,000 bank funding gap**, despite the larger total balance.

<!-- chart:funds -->

This example assumes no opening balance, reserve, tax or other movement. It does not assert that a particular wallet permits the required transfer. Test the actual wallet-to-bank product, timing, fees and limits before relying on it. If transfer terms change, the amount and timing available for the supplier change too.

For payouts, distinguish a funded instruction, credit to the recipient's wallet and any later cash withdrawal. Confirm agent access and the recipient's applicable withdrawal conditions if cash is part of the intended experience. A wallet-credit notification alone is not evidence of a completed cash withdrawal.

## Test confirmation quality without inventing conversion

This inventory contains no comparable transaction-level success dataset. We cannot calculate an observed conversion average, approval rate or typical payment duration from it. A provider's marketing percentage is not a substitute for a numerator, denominator, measurement window and treatment of retries.

Use a test plan with a successful collection, insufficient funds, an interrupted customer session, delayed confirmation, a repeated request and a refund. For payouts, include an incorrect recipient and an unresolved result. Ask which identifier remains stable across reports, status queries and support cases.

Agree how an unresolved operation is investigated before a replacement is created. The goal is a traceable order or payout record that finance can reconcile, with a clear owner for exceptions. Do not mistake a second notification for a second payment, or a missing notification for proof that nothing happened.

## Confirm the entity and service scope

The [Central Bank of The Gambia](https://www.cbg.gm/index) describes its supervision of banking and mobile-money activities. Its published [Mobile Money Regulation, 2011](https://www.cbg.gm/downloads-file/b2064e61-f37b-11e9-876c-02e599c15748) addresses domestic electronic retail transfers and provider authorisation. This historical instrument is still hosted by the regulator; it is not a complete statement of all current conditions for a proposed service.

Before onboarding, obtain the provider's current authorisation and confirm that the exact collection or payout product, business activity, contracting entity and account structure fall within its permitted scope. A consumer registration page does not settle the requirements for a foreign merchant, an agent business or international settlement.

PayStar supports lawful business activity using appropriately authorised payment services. Sector-specific permissions, applicable restrictions, ownership checks and cross-border requirements need assessment for the actual parties and flow. Public documentation alone does not approve a merchant. Local sources were reviewed on **14 October 2026**; recheck changeable rules and terms before launch.

## PayStar's role

PayStar provides information and agreed technical services. It is not a bank or payment service provider and does not organise payment acceptance or settlement in its own name. PayStar does not receive, hold or settle funds belonging to customers or businesses.

The business chooses its payment provider and contracts with that provider directly. The provider supplies the payment service and is responsible for processing and settlement under that contract. PayStar Discovery can help structure the comparison and clarify commercial and operating questions. Any PayStar API, routing or control capabilities remain within the agreed technical scope; they do not replace the provider's responsibility or guarantee availability, approval or results.
