# Payment Providers in Malaysia: From DuitNow Checkout to Refund

When comparing payment providers in Malaysia, follow one purchase through checkout, reconciliation and a possible refund. That exercise reveals more than a list of supported logos: which customer journey you can offer, which merchant entity can use it, and what evidence your finance team receives when money moves back.

## A numerical starting point for the provider comparison

We reviewed **33 unique historical payment offers** linked only to this country: 24 collection offers and 9 payout offers. They provide a structured starting point for comparing payment costs, access to funds and operational requirements. 70 additional offers linked to several countries are excluded from the country-only calculations below.

The source is the PayStar export dated 14 September 2026, supplied by payment gateways. We recomputed its aggregates, but did not independently verify its commercial statements. This is a historical sample, not a market survey, a count of PSPs or methods, or proof of active connections and current availability. Conditions can change weekly or more often. Independent country, currency and method associations do not establish every possible payment route. Direction counts and settlement-label charts cover all recorded currencies. Only the percentage comparison below is restricted to explicit MYR fee records.

## What the recorded MYR percentage components show

We calculate the arithmetic mean of explicit percentage components stated in MYR, giving each comparable offer equal weight. A record qualifies only when its structured percentage matches one unambiguous percentage in the original fee description. Offers in another fee currency, missing percentages and ambiguous descriptions are excluded.

We also exclude bound or conditional percentages such as “from”, tiers and explicitly restricted customer categories. Exact nominal percentage components with fixed minimums or caps can remain in the sample; those minimums and caps still affect the final charge.

| Direction | n | Mean | Median | Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Collections | 24 | 3.46% | 3.75% | 1.8–4.5% |
| Payouts | 8 | 2.13% | 2.25% | 1.4–2.5% |

Explicit MYR percentage components only. n is the comparable sample in each direction; missing fees are excluded, not zero. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/malaysia-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/fees-en-desktop-download.svg)

**These are percentage components, not all-in payment prices.** Fixed charges, FX, tax, reserves, minimums and charges for refunds or other exceptions must be assessed separately. This sample is not weighted by payment volume, contains no measured conversion rate and cannot rank provider quality. Small or insufficiently independent groups are withheld.

### A hypothetical payment calculation

Take an illustrative payment of 20 MYR; this is not a typical market ticket. Applying the rounded means shown above gives:

- Collections: 20 MYR × 3.46% = **0.69 MYR**.
- Payouts: 20 MYR × 2.13% = **0.43 MYR**.

Each line is a separate direction, not a combined service quote. The arithmetic shows only the percentage part. Ask for an actual quote at your ticket size, volume, business model and settlement currency before calculating net proceeds.

## When money becomes usable matters

Collection offers across all recorded currencies. T/D labels are recorded as supplied, without assuming calendar or business days. Other includes complex labels and pooled groups below 3 records. No guaranteed settlement time. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/malaysia-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/timing-en-desktop-download.svg)

A successful payment notification and money available to your business are different events. Treat recorded settlement labels as questions for a provider: what starts the clock, which cut-off applies, are weekends counted, which account is credited, and can a reserve or review delay availability?

For payouts, agree prefunding, beneficiary validation, rejection handling and how returned funds appear in your balance. An incoming-payment settlement label does not prove payout completion time.

### A cash-buffer planning example

If a business must fund 2,000 MYR of obligations per day, a one-day gap requires 2,000 MYR; a three-day gap requires 6,000 MYR. The additional buffer is 4,000 MYR. This is a hypothetical constant-flow model, excluding fees, reserves and volatility, not an observed settlement promise.

## Choose the customer journey first

DuitNow QR merchant acceptance lets a customer scan a merchant's code using a participating banking or e-wallet application. PayNet documents merchant-presented codes in both static and dynamic forms. Ask the acquirer which format it provides and how the amount and order reference reach your records. [PayNet: DuitNow QR overview](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitNow-QR/introduction/overview).

DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets, or DOBW, provides an online checkout journey: the customer is redirected from an e-commerce or mobile-commerce platform to a bank or e-wallet application to approve payment. [PayNet: DOBW overview](https://knowledgebase.paynet.my/hc/en-us/articles/49693853472025-What-is-DuitNow-Online-Banking-Wallets).

A useful provider comparison names the exact flow: a cashier's QR, an order-specific QR, or redirected online checkout. Then test the customer's return to your site, the merchant's payment confirmation and the reference available for reconciliation. A proposal that simply says “DuitNow supported” leaves these decisions open.

## Qualify the merchant behind the checkout

PayNet directs merchants to a participating acquirer for DuitNow QR onboarding. Its guidance describes business registration or trading-licence requirements, with some acquirers also supporting particular home-based businesses. DOBW registration likewise starts through an acquirer. [QR merchant onboarding](https://knowledgebase.paynet.my/hc/en-us/articles/49583136924441-How-do-merchants-onboard-to-DuitNow-QR), [DOBW registration](https://knowledgebase.paynet.my/hc/en-us/articles/56895807219481-DOBW-FAQ-Merchant-Registration).

The product-specific detail matters. PayNet's published **DuitNow Pay merchant-registration guide currently limits that registration template to local entities**. Apply that requirement to the documented implementation; do not treat it as a universal eligibility rule for every Malaysian payment product. Confirm the contracting entity, registration documents, receiving account and business activity with the proposed acquirer. [PayNet: merchant-registration guide](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitnow-pay/merchant-registration).

Cross-border QR answers a different question. PayNet describes its inbound flow as foreign bank-account customers paying local merchants in Malaysia. That describes the payer's access, not permission for an overseas merchant to enrol or settle abroad. Specify buyer countries, supported applications and the merchant's settlement arrangement separately. [PayNet: inbound cross-border QR](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitNow-QR/integration/merchant-presented-QR/crossborder-inbound-QR).

## Follow a refund beyond its first acknowledgement

PayNet's DuitNow Pay refund interface links a refund request to the original checkout and payment method. It gives the refund its own identifier and returns a network reference for reconciliation. The initial processing state is REFUND_PENDING. [PayNet: initiate payment refund](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitnow-pay/integration/initiate-refund).

There is a useful operational distinction in the status documentation: REFUND_ACCEPTED means the refund has been sent to the issuing bank for processing. Your support team therefore needs the PSP's explanation of what proves the customer's account has actually been credited. Ask how it investigates an accepted refund that the customer still cannot see. [PayNet: refund status](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitnow-pay/integration/refund-status).

PayNet describes DuitNow Reversal as returning money to the original payer through the original payment source. It also places responsibility for validating refund requests with acquirers, which may apply their own refund rules. Confirm partial-refund support, remaining refundable balance, repeat-request controls and the evidence supplied for each result. [PayNet: DuitNow Reversal](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitnow-reversal/integration/overview).

For an illustrative RM240 purchase followed by a completed RM40 refund, the retained purchase amount is RM200 before fees or other adjustments. The useful report links the RM40 movement to the RM240 purchase and records its outcome. A pending refund should remain distinguishable from that completed example. Ask for a synthetic or appropriately anonymised sample showing both cases.

## Evaluate MYR payouts as a separate operation

A customer refund and a new business payout have different instructions and evidence. For DuitNow Transfer, PayNet documents an account enquiry that checks the beneficiary account and returns the beneficiary name before payment confirmation. [PayNet: account enquiry](https://docs.developer.paynet.my/docs/duitnow-transfer/integration/account-enquiry).

Ask a payout provider whether its business interface exposes that check, which recipient identifiers it accepts and what happens when the name or account cannot be validated. Also establish the final payout result, handling of uncertain outcomes and the reference carried into the account statement. A bank's customer-facing transfer journey does not establish the capabilities of a particular business payout API.

## The role of PayStar

PayStar provides information for comparing payment solutions and, where agreed, a technical layer for connecting and operating them. PayStar is not a bank or payment service provider and does not accept, hold or settle customer or business funds in its own name.

You select the payment provider and enter into a direct agreement with it. The provider processes payments and performs settlement under that agreement. Local eligibility, required authorisations and commercial terms must be confirmed for your company and use case. A method described in this article is not a promise that it is available through PayStar for your business.

Information about payment options is free. Payment processing and any agreed technical services have separate commercial terms.
