# Payment Providers in Zambia: Plan Collections and Payout Funding

Choosing payment providers in Zambia starts with two different questions: how customers pay your business, and how your business funds payments to other people. A familiar mobile-money brand or access to a national network does not answer both. The practical comparison follows the money through collection, available balance, payout funding and each recipient's result.

## A numerical starting point for the provider comparison

We reviewed **14 unique historical payment offers** linked only to this country: 7 collection offers and 7 payout offers. They provide a structured starting point for comparing payment costs, access to funds and operational requirements. 69 additional offers linked to several countries are excluded from the country-only calculations below.

The source is the PayStar export dated 14 September 2026, supplied by payment gateways. We recomputed its aggregates, but did not independently verify its commercial statements. This is a historical sample, not a market survey, a count of PSPs or methods, or proof of active connections and current availability. Conditions can change weekly or more often. Independent country, currency and method associations do not establish every possible payment route. Direction counts and settlement-label charts cover all recorded currencies. Only the percentage comparison below is restricted to explicit ZMW fee records.

## What the recorded ZMW percentage components show

We calculate the arithmetic mean of explicit percentage components stated in ZMW, giving each comparable offer equal weight. A record qualifies only when its structured percentage matches one unambiguous percentage in the original fee description. Offers in another fee currency, missing percentages and ambiguous descriptions are excluded.

We also exclude bound or conditional percentages such as “from”, tiers and explicitly restricted customer categories. Exact nominal percentage components with fixed minimums or caps can remain in the sample; those minimums and caps still affect the final charge.

| Direction | n | Mean | Median | Range |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Collections | 7 | 6.1% | 6% | 5.2–7.5% |
| Payouts | 7 | 4.4% | 4.5% | 3–5.5% |

Explicit ZMW percentage components only. n is the comparable sample in each direction; missing fees are excluded, not zero. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/zambia-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/fees-en-desktop-download.svg)

**These are percentage components, not all-in payment prices.** Fixed charges, FX, tax, reserves, minimums and charges for refunds or other exceptions must be assessed separately. This sample is not weighted by payment volume, contains no measured conversion rate and cannot rank provider quality. Small or insufficiently independent groups are withheld.

### A hypothetical payment calculation

Take an illustrative payment of 100 ZMW; this is not a typical market ticket. Applying the rounded means shown above gives:

- Collections: 100 ZMW × 6.1% = **6.1 ZMW**.
- Payouts: 100 ZMW × 4.4% = **4.4 ZMW**.

Each line is a separate direction, not a combined service quote. The arithmetic shows only the percentage part. Ask for an actual quote at your ticket size, volume, business model and settlement currency before calculating net proceeds.

## When money becomes usable matters

Collection offers across all recorded currencies. T/D labels are recorded as supplied, without assuming calendar or business days. Other includes complex labels and pooled groups below 3 records. No guaranteed settlement time. [Download SVG](https://paystar.uk/zambia-payment-solutions/media/2026-10-08-v2/charts/timing-en-desktop-download.svg)

A successful payment notification and money available to your business are different events. Treat recorded settlement labels as questions for a provider: what starts the clock, which cut-off applies, are weekends counted, which account is credited, and can a reserve or review delay availability?

For payouts, agree prefunding, beneficiary validation, rejection handling and how returned funds appear in your balance. An incoming-payment settlement label does not prove payout completion time.

### A cash-buffer planning example

If a business must fund 10,000 ZMW of obligations per day, a one-day gap requires 10,000 ZMW; a three-day gap requires 30,000 ZMW. The additional buffer is 20,000 ZMW. This is a hypothetical constant-flow model, excluding fees, reserves and volatility, not an observed settlement promise.

## What the National Financial Switch tells you

Zambia Electronic Clearing House describes the National Financial Switch (NFS) as shared infrastructure connecting banks, financial institutions and payment service providers. Its net-settlement reporting service aggregates instructions from channels including ATM, point-of-sale and electronic-money transactions. These descriptions establish the role of shared infrastructure; they do not establish the settlement timetable or recipient coverage in your merchant agreement. [ZECHL: NFS](https://www.zechl.co.zm/national-financial-switch/); [net-settlement reporting](https://www.zechl.co.zm/net-settlement-reporting/).

For a useful shortlist, ask each provider to identify the business product, supported sending and receiving institutions, and transaction purpose. A bank-to-wallet transfer, online purchase and bulk supplier payment can have different operating requirements. Request an explicit route matrix instead of assuming that one successful transfer proves every combination works.

## Collections: where does the money become usable?

The Zambia-specific collections-widget documentation on MTN's developer portal describes e-commerce receipts held in a collections account and an option to move funds to a bank account. This is a concrete example of the distinction between receiving a customer's payment and moving business funds onward. The portal is labelled as a test environment; use its published procedures to formulate questions, then obtain current production terms. Ask a candidate PSP to demonstrate one complete purchase: customer confirmation, the order reference in the merchant report, the credited balance and the eventual bank transfer. Check how fees and refunds appear in that sequence. If an order is cancelled after receipt, establish which balance funds its refund and how the refund relates to the original transaction.

A useful comparison therefore includes more than the headline collection fee. Record the bank-transfer charge, settlement frequency, any reserve and the evidence provided when money moves between accounts. Keep an agreed schedule separate from the time a customer sees a successful payment.

## ZMW payouts: qualify the product separately

MTN's Zambia disbursement documentation describes a dedicated, prefunded account and limits the documented solution to recipients registered with MTN Mobile Money. It also specifies two approval levels and a report showing individual payment outcomes. Those details apply to that published product description; they do not define every Zambian payout service or promise a live capability for your company. [MTN Zambia disbursement procedures](https://momodeveloper.mtn.com/Zambia_Disbursement_productDetails)

For comparison, put these operational questions into the brief:

| Decision | Evidence to request |
| --- | --- |
| Who can receive the payout? | Supported wallet or bank destination, account requirements and the permitted payment purpose. |
| Where does funding sit? | Account to credit, when funds become usable and whether collection balances can fund payouts. |
| Who can release money? | Separation of file preparation and approval, with an audit trail for changes. |
| How is completion established? | A result and reference for each recipient, plus the process for investigating an unresolved item. |

Do not assume incoming revenue automatically replenishes the payout account. Ask whether transfers between business balances are supported, who approves them and which charges or delays apply.

## A batch worth testing before launch

Consider a hypothetical business paying twenty suppliers **750 ZMW each**. The principal is **15,000 ZMW**, before any separately agreed fees. Its collection account shows 18,000 ZMW, while the designated payout account has 12,000 ZMW. The shortfall in that payout account is 3,000 ZMW before fees; total money across both accounts does not prove the batch is funded.

The next test is a partial outcome: eighteen payments confirmed, one rejected and one unresolved. Confirmed principal is 13,500 ZMW; the other 1,500 ZMW needs two different decisions. Correcting a rejected destination does not resolve the unknown payment. Ask the provider how to establish that item's final result before another instruction could duplicate it. Do not equate unresolved principal with freely available balance: a debit, reservation or reversal may still need investigation.

Finally, reconcile recipient results, charges and the funding-account statement. This is an illustrative control exercise, not a claim about a particular provider's production behaviour or tariff.

## The role of PayStar

PayStar provides information for comparing payment solutions and, where agreed, a technical layer for connecting and operating them. PayStar is not a bank or payment service provider and does not accept, hold or settle customer or business funds in its own name.

You select the payment provider and enter into a direct agreement with it. The provider processes payments and performs settlement under that agreement. Local eligibility, required authorisations and commercial terms must be confirmed for your company and use case. A method described in this article is not a promise that it is available through PayStar for your business.

Information about payment options is free. Payment processing and any agreed technical services have separate commercial terms.
