Choosing payment solutions in China starts with a precise question: which business will receive the money, for which transaction, and into which account? Alipay or Weixin Pay at checkout answers only part of that question. A PSP comparison becomes useful when it connects the customer's payment experience to merchant eligibility, refunds, business payouts and settlement.

PayStar's snapshot dated 14 September 2026 contains 26 unique recorded payment offers associated only with China: 14 classified as collections and 12 as payouts. All 26 have a CNY currency association. These are research leads, not counts of independent PSPs, live connections or approved payment routes. The currency links do not establish settlement currency or every possible method-and-direction combination.

A customer wallet and a merchant account have different jobs

Consumer payment announcements need careful reading. Tencent's May 2026 announcement described PayPal QR purchases at Weixin Pay merchants in China, initially for US users. That concerns visitors paying existing merchants; it does not establish a new merchant's eligibility. Tencent's inbound payment announcement

For the merchant side, WeChat Pay's PC website guide describes Native payment: the merchant's system generates a payment QR code and the customer scans it to confirm the specified amount. The same guide separately lists company documents, a corporate bank account, review and agreement steps. This is a defined merchant application process, not an assurance that every overseas company can use that product. WeChat Pay merchant guide

Ask a potential PSP to demonstrate the actual journey: desktop QR checkout, mobile browser, or an in-app payment. Request the order identifier, payment confirmation and failure result for that journey. A screenshot of a successful consumer payment cannot answer how your finance team will reconcile orders or investigate missing confirmations.

Establish the merchant arrangement before comparing prices

Start the brief with the contracting entity, country of registration, business activity and website or app. Then specify whether the proposed arrangement is domestic merchant acceptance or a cross-border service, and where customers and the settlement account are located.

Alipay Global's WAP product page gives a concrete example. Its application conditions include a business licence, an implementation URL, company information and identity documents. The business category must meet applicable requirements. It also lists foreign settlement currencies and makes the settlement mode contractual. Those conditions describe that product; they are not a universal Alipay eligibility rule. Alipay Global WAP payment

An accepted wallet brand therefore belongs in the comparison alongside the exact product and merchant agreement. Before treating an offer as qualified, ask the PSP to confirm your entity, activity, customer geography and intended flow in writing. Keep any unresolved requirement visible instead of counting the option as ready to launch.

CNY at checkout does not define the settlement account

Record three currencies separately: the customer's payment currency, the merchant's pricing currency and the currency credited to the settlement account. Where conversion occurs, request the rate source, conversion point and fees. Also identify the account holder and destination country.

Alipay publishes a separate agreement for eligible cross-border platform proceeds paid into a designated mainland RMB account after application review. That agreement calls for transaction information and supporting trade documents. This is a specific inward settlement service, not evidence that any China-linked payment can be moved across borders. Timing also needs its own answer. Alipay's global settlement help distinguishes settlement by amount from settlement by cycle and notes the role of banks in final receipt timing. Use that distinction to ask about the proposed contract's trigger, calendar, deductions and bank receipt. Do not substitute a generic help-page schedule for the PSP's offer. Alipay settlement modes

Compare collections, refunds and payouts separately

Collections receive customer payments for the merchant's sales. Refunds relate to an earlier order. Business payouts send money to an eligible recipient for a stated purpose. Treat these as separate qualification questions: the recorded payout classification alone does not prove a particular business payout use case.

Requirement Collections and order refunds Business payouts
Transaction evidence Order, payment and original refund references Recipient details and payment purpose
Product confirmation Supported checkout and refund operation Supported recipient type and destination
Financial comparison Processing fees, refund treatment and settlement Funding, payout fees and failed-payment treatment
Operational proof Payment confirmation and reconciliation records Final status, failure reason and returned funds

For a hypothetical example, consider a merchant planning 200 orders at CNY 300 each: CNY 60,000 in gross collections. Ten full refunds would represent CNY 3,000 against original orders. A separate proposed CNY 5,000 supplier payment is a different requirement. The arithmetic does not show that the collection balance can fund that payout, or when CNY 57,000 after refunds becomes available. Those answers depend on the qualified products and their contracts. This is an illustration, not a customer case or quoted offer.

Bring a specific China brief to Discovery

Share your registration country, business activity, checkout environment, expected ticket size and volume, settlement account requirements, and any payout recipients and purposes. PayStar Discovery structures the research and qualification into a focused PSP shortlist. You choose the PSP and contract with it directly; the PSP handles processing and settlement under that agreement.
