A customer copies the bank details shown at checkout, closes the page and pays later. Can your team establish whether those details still belong to a valid payment request? When comparing payment providers in Nigeria, the lifecycle of the receiving account deserves as much attention as the ability to accept a transfer. Collections and NGN payouts also need different evidence and operating rules.
PayStar's 14 September 2026 snapshot contains 24 unique recorded payment offers linked only to Nigeria: 13 for collections and 11 for payouts. All 24 have an NGN currency association. These are offer records, rather than counts of independent providers or active connections. The associations do not establish a particular method-and-currency route; current availability and suitability for your business require qualification.
Decide how long the collection details should work
Bank-transfer acceptance can use an account assigned to a customer or one created for a particular checkout. That choice affects what happens when a customer saves the details and uses them again.
Paystack's public documentation illustrates both models. Its Pay with Transfer flow creates a temporary account tied to a transaction, with an expiry. Its Dedicated Virtual Accounts flow associates incoming transfers with a customer. These are examples from published product documentation, without implying a PayStar partnership or inclusion in the offer count. For a checkout account, compare the payment window with your stock reservation or booking hold. Ask how the PSP handles transfers initiated near expiry, payments attempted with old details and repeated payments. The checkout should communicate the applicable expiry and explain how to obtain current details.
For an assigned customer account, ask when it can be deactivated or replaced, how customers learn about changes and what evidence links each incoming payment to the intended purchase. Customer identification alone does not define your order-allocation policy.
Test a late payment before launch
Consider a hypothetical NGN 35,000 order with a 30-minute reservation. The shopper saves the temporary account details and attempts payment 45 minutes later, after the reservation has ended. The times and amount are invented for comparison; they are not a provider's quoted terms.
Ask each candidate to walk through this case. Was a transfer rejected, received or still unresolved? Which bank or PSP record establishes the result? If funds arrived after the order became unavailable, who decides whether to offer a replacement or begin a refund, and how is that decision recorded?
The outcome must come from the selected arrangement. Do not promise automatic rejection or reversal simply because the checkout expired. This example tests how the PSP's account lifecycle and your fulfilment rules work together.
Separate missing notification from confirmed failure
A customer's debit notification and the merchant's payment confirmation are different pieces of evidence. Your support process should retain the order reference, amount, time and PSP transaction reference, then use the provider's documented verification procedure.
For its dedicated accounts, Paystack documents payment notifications and a requery process when notification is delayed. That is a useful capability to ask other candidates about, with their own response formats and access conditions. Dedicated account requery documentation.
Ask how repeated notifications are identified and how a previously unresolved transaction is updated. Fulfilment should follow an authenticated result matched to the correct order, with an exception process for discrepancies.
Qualify NGN payouts separately
For business payouts in Nigeria, begin with the beneficiary account, the purpose of payment and the funding arrangement. NIBSS describes NIP services that include Name Enquiry for beneficiary details and Transaction Status Query for an earlier transfer. These are network services; the merchant needs to establish what its PSP exposes. NIBSS NIP services.
| Payout question | Evidence to request from the PSP |
|---|---|
| Who is the intended recipient? | Bank, account details and returned beneficiary name, with a mismatch procedure |
| Was the transfer accepted or completed? | Defined statuses, status-query access and records linking the payout to its result |
| Can support trace a disputed receipt? | Available network reference, bank escalation procedure and responsible contact |
| Is another attempt safe? | Duplicate prevention and a documented decision process for unresolved results |
Paystack's public support guide gives a concrete Nigeria example: when a transfer shows success but the recipient reports no credit, the session ID can help the receiving bank trace it. Ask whether the proposed payout service makes equivalent evidence available. A reference supports investigation; it does not itself resolve a disputed receipt. Paystack transfer support.
Also check current account controls. CBN's official summary of its March 2026 instant-payment guidance describes voluntary customer opt-out and the ability to choose lower personal transaction limits, subject to verification and risk assessment; existing regulatory ceilings remain unchanged. These controls make the payer's actual account settings relevant to support and failure handling. CBN reforms and initiatives.
Turn these questions into a provider shortlist
Request separate collection and payout terms: eligibility for your legal entity and activity, available banks, fees, limits, funding requirements and settlement currency and schedule. Domestic NGN payment functionality does not establish cross-border settlement or acceptance of a foreign company.
PayStar Discovery helps structure research and qualification around your market, business model, expected volumes and operating needs. The merchant selects and contracts directly with the PSP; the PSP handles processing and settlement under that agreement.
